Mr. Lif - I Phantom
While I Phantom is supposedly a concept album I shied away from finding out more and just taking the album song for song. The basic concept is “an exploration of the dynamics of everyday life, and the pursuit of our dreams, in a rapidly decaying society. The first batch of songs has a character in a dream state and the next bunch, about a guy get jerked around in everyday life, and then the downfall of American society. Take it song for song and you will be blown away at Mr. Lif’s capable rhyming and production skills. Let’s leave the concept albums to Prince Paul and Dan The Automator. Mr. Lif gets some pretty decent guest artists too like NASA, labelmate El-P, Edan, Fakts One, Insight, powerhouse Aesop Rock, and Akrobatik. But for the most part you hear Lif rapping out the entire album. Oh, and he is one of the best rappers to come along in a while. A few outweigh him but he’s got the skills to pay the bills.
