New Flesh is a new hip hop act on Ninja Tune and while they reach back to the old school like Grandmaster Flash for influence they still manage to keep elements of the way hip hop is heading. On Understanding, the group incorporates many stellar guest appearances from Roots Manuva, Anti-Pop Consortium, Blackalicious, and Ty and keeps a flow going on the album. New Flesh doesn’t break down any new walls with their music but they do manage to flavor their music with spatterings of reggae which adds a nice difference. This album is not near as dark as their debut, Equilibrium, but uses the reggae and dancehall to keep it fun and interesting. There is still a broad array of styles on Understanding but for the most part the music is groovy and will appeal to a broad audience.
