And yet if you did think this way, you would be wrong. Despite the seemingly upbeat nature of its title, "One Lovely Day" is actually a rather downbeat little number, perfectly suited to a day like today. I can just imagine Citizen Cope sitting inside, looking out of the window on a dreary day such as this, and singing "One Lovely Day" in the almost forlorn hope that one day it will indeed be, one lovely day.
Citizen Cope's melancholy sounding voice is a major contributor to the effect this song has. Kind of like John Martyn without the heavy slurring or Tom Waits without the gravel in his throat, the voice has a quality which, while not miserable, is not cheerful either. Ideally suited to the song and the day itself. The string arrangement behind the song has that end of summer ring to it, remembering past glories, lying in the sun beneath clear blue sky and thinking of nothing in particular.
What is particularly appealing is that "One Lovely Day" is not in any sense a localised song. It is as at home in the Puget Sound as it is in the Thames Estuary, Placentia Bay or the Foveaux Strait. Nor is it confined to any time. "One Lovely Day" is for all places and all eras, provided that the weather is depressing and the longing for something brighter and more cheery seems mere wishful thinking.

I thought of Jack Johnson when I heard One Lovely Day. I didnt find One Lovely day as melancholy but more as a way to take advantage of the time he has with his loved ones. It was too upbeat in my mind to classify it as melancholy. Ive never heard Citizen Cope before, but I think of them as Donovan Frankenwriter meets Jack Johnson, only with less talent. I like the piano arrangements and actually enjoyed the song as well, and I typically dont enjoy music of this. Kind of like a mellow lets get the fuck out of this shithole and do something simple because were broke kinda theme. Then again, thats what Im going through right now, so the song kinda spoke to me.
Then I listened to something to believe in. I think its poorly arranged lyrically. Once again, I like the steady drumbeat and the piano arrangement, but I disliked the fuzzy sound. I think their songs are better when theyre just string and piano. I know that gets to be too much. If this band kept it simple it would be a great album. Piano, guitar, drums, and on some songs the lyrics arent too bad. Two words; vocal lessons.
Stripped down I think the album has promise, but reverbing his voice doesnt actually DO anything for the tracks.
Still, the band shows some musical promise. Good beats and good melodies, just too many effects. The chimes of Back then are a great example. They arent needed. The instruments and effects actually hide his voice. I think its a poorly mixed album. At the same time I think it shows promise and I think they have talent. Keep it simple, Citizen.
