Nanci Griffith was just bound for success. Once In A Very Blue Moon is only her third album in a career that is still going strong. And on this album she utilizes some talent that has gone on to great success theirselves. Not only does she perform a Lyle Lovett penned track (“If I Were The Woman You Wanted) but Lovett adds his harmony vocals to a few tracks on the album. Another artist is Bela Fleck who shows off his stellar banjo playing on a few tracks. As well, Mark O’Connor plays violin and mandolin on many of the tracks. But Once In A Very Blue Moon is more than the amazing musicians, it’s really about some great songs written by a very talented young songwriter. Nanci shows that you don’t have to be old and withered to have aquired enough material to sing and write about. Griffith’s voice has come into her own here as well. I really can’t pinpoint a favorite song because when I think “this is it then I head on to the next track that blows me away even more. If you are a fan of Griffith’s current material you have to head back into her past to realize that she has had the gift for quite a few years now. Nanci Griffith is one of the perfect examples of a fine female singer/songwriter who isn’t afraid to meld folk and country to make her very special music. The 2002 release has been pleasantly remastered.
