Holopaw is the vehicle that singer/songwriter John Orth delivers his crafty, earthy pop. Orth managed to get his band signed to Sub Pop through his connection with Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock with whom he collaborated with on his Ugly Casanova project. Sub Pop was interested in any band that Brock felt worthy of attention. Holopaw has one foot in country and one foot in indie rock. It works. Imagine Modest Mouse with out the jerkiness and a bit of twang and you are almost at Holopaw. They aren’t as country as Whiskeytown but they do have a lot of the same characteristics. They hail from Gainesville, FL, which makes sense with all the country tinges. John Orth is a fantastic songwriter and this band reflects every thought out lyric. His voice is always on the edge. He is gentle but his voice rises to the occasion during the course of the song. John does remind me of Ryan Adams a bit but his songs are more indie rock oriented. Holopaw is a fine debut for a fine songwriter. Sub Pop is off to a great year with this album.
