In celebration of Rounder Records Thirtieth Anniversary they have chosen to come out with a Heritage Series that highlights some of their definitive American Roots music. What better way to start out such a series than with the band that they label borrowed its name from. The Holy Modal Rounders, while not exclusively a Rounder artist, has been a draw for quite a while, off and on since 1964. If you are unaware of this band, you are not alone. The Holy Modal Rounders never really found much commercial success with their goofy folk music. The band was the twisted offspring of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber and throughout the years they have had numerous other members involved. Don’t be fooled by the bands goofiness because they really know how to play their instruments and are really hot songwriters. I Make A Wish For A Potato is actually a fine compilation for the Rounders and it is as good a place as any to begin this strange trip. So if you like your folk music with a sense of humor, give The Holy Modal Rounders a chance.
