Some one once told me, "The thing about expectations, they often times leave you open for disappointment."
Never more true than the case of music supergroup's such as Smoke & Jackal. Consisting of Mona lead singer Nick Brown and Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill, expectations are certainly high to say the least.
Songs like "Fall Around" lengthen a short six song EP in an atmospheric kind of way. Meanwhile, "Road Side" has an organic drum and bass to it where Brown shows uninhibited vocal energy and many ranges. "Save Face" sustains a moody blank stare but is enigmatic in the same breath.
Most memorable and stamping to your brain should be "You're Lost", where Brown's vocal belting takes on a tone that always imagined/hoped would pair with Explosions In The Sky. This song will stamp itself into your brain, leaving you with no choice but to click repeat several or more times.
Not only do you have an album full of expectations, you have as charasmatic a release as I've heard all year. If you're worth your weight in external terrabytes, you know effortless alt/rock with very little polishing is fairly rare these days.
I know I've said this before, but the only thing this formation has done wrong thusfar is tease us with just a taste of what they're capable of.
