It is a complete mystery to why Jill Sobule hasn’t broken into the mainstream. Her sweet voice is such a pleasure to listen to and her songwriting skills are far superior to other singer / songwriters out there. With the Lisa Loeb’s and the Sheryl Crow’s making a killing on the pop charts, you wouldn’t think there would be problem for Sobule’s charm to make a splash. She was smart not to call this retrospective a “Greatest Hits� album because in all honesty, she hasn’t had any (except for the semi-success of “I Kissed a Girl� in 1995). I Never Learned To Swim does a fine job though, pulling from all of her labels and albums to compile a very thorough glimpse at her career. It shows just how consistent Jill really is even though the mainstream is not watching. Her short lived Atlantic contract was short lived. In fact, she only made two albums for the label, proof that a label can’t sell anything. If Jill Sobule got any radio play whatsoever, she would have easily matched the success of Lisa Loeb or Sheryl Crow. If you have never listen to Sobule, do yourself a favor and introduce yourself with I Never Learned To Swim.
