I’m a big fan of Deep Purple, particularly the classic stuff. So, I was really looking forward to this disc. I’ll say that, for the most part I was satisfied with the results. This isn’t a perfect set, but it’s got a lot of great music here. Getting to check out variants of such classic music is a cool experience.
Interestingly enough, Glenn Hughes, who was in Deep Purple for a while (but not on the Machine Head album) shows up on two songs. Several big bands turn in performances. Those are “Highway Star” by supergroup Chickenfoot, “Pictures of Home” by Black Label Society, “Space Truckin'” by Iron Maiden and “When A Blind Man Cries” by Metallica.
While normally I don’t consider Deep Purple (or even this album) to be heavy metal, the overall texture here is metal, but there are exceptions. There are also a few oddities. For one thing, there are two versions of “Smoke on the Water” and the second one, by Flaming Lips, is a bit too weird and doesn’t really fit here. It would have been better as a bonus track tacked onto the end. All in all, though, this is quite a strong release that has a lot of variety and is quite successful for the most part. Fans of Deep Purple will probably be split, with purists hating it. Those looking for some novel variety on familiar music will be pleased. For listeners who are more casual fans of the group are more likely to enjoy this. Fans of hard rock with no real ties to the sound of Purple will also find plenty to enjoy here.
