Kids of 88 - Sugarpills
For those who dig a lighthearted upbeat album for summer and would like something a little less mainstream than Lady Gaga, Kids of 88 have an album that's exactly what the doctor ordered. The band has had some moderate commercial success and radio play in their native New Zealand, but now that internet has latched onto them, their debut album Sugarpills has spread to countries across the world.
Pretty much every track has a strong, danceable beat, and the lyrics range from fun and youthful to downright tongue-in-cheek. While this is not a joke act in the sense of Lonely Island, and Kids of 88 are certainly serious musicians, as a listener you definitely get the feeling that they want to have fun with their music, and that they want the audience to get caught up in that fun.
"Just a Little Bit" is perhaps the strongest track on the album in terms of summer dance tracks, which is saying a lot because even the slower songs make you want to get up and move. A catchy melody combined with a memorable synth hook is a winning combination, and this album has song after song with that formula. That said, it's not a repetitive album at all - though Kids of 88 stay true to a particular style of infectious electro-pop, they have enough good songwriting ideas that each song has its own particular appeal.
This is a great debut album, and hopefully foreshadows many good things to come for this dynamic and talented duo.
