Let me start off by saying that South has a bit of an identity crisis. They are not sure whether they want to fit into the Badly Drawn Boy category of the cut and paste style rock, or if they want to fit into some electronica category. This really isn’t a bad thing for people with patience because South will grow on you the more you listen to it. When the band decide to use vocals they sound a lot like Ian Brown and his Stone Roses, not quite as upbeat though. Mowax head leader James Lavelle takes production credits and you can really hear his influence on tracks such as “Broken Head II. Its almost as if Lavelle added a little too much of his electronica influences to their almost straight ahead Brit-rock. But like I said, this isn’t really a bad thing after a few listens. You will start to understand South the more times you hit repeat and most open minded listeners will. They take influences like Happy Mondays and the Roses and bring them into the new millennium with style. A strange addition to Mowax but it is a refreshing a delightful album.
