Parquet Courts has come up with an excellent debut album, featuring a powerful garage band sound. They come out of the recording gates as a rock powerhouse.
The band keeps the speed going throughout the album. There are no slow ones here. But it isn't one dimensional. They can add more melody, when they want to.
They have a knack for the hook on "Picture of Health." They excel at the brief song on this 15 song offering. Cuts less than 1:30 are heard throughout the album. "Careers in Combat" comes in at 1:07 and catches the frustrations of making it in the job market in the tradition of the Clash, Public Enemy or the Hives.
Disney P.T. is another catchy short one.
"Tears of Plenty" is the most successful track here. Andrew Savage's vocals work well with the music. The instrument playing shows good chemistry and power.
There aren't any duds on this album. Humor is evident on "North Dakota." Maybe Savage is an eccentric genius in the tradition of Brian Wilson.
The band likes to party perhaps to a fault. But it wants to be creative and has a prolifc streak as evident by the number of songs. Hopefully they're not on "Borrowed Time," which is a song you want to keep coming back to, as well.
