Trying different styles can is a good thing. Not everyone thinks so. It can be seen as lacking focus. Dabbling is fine as long as its done in terrain, where artists can thrive rather than spin their wheels.
Diversity if O.K. with me such as when Soft Pack takes on different styles of jamming on its second album. Not all of it draws you in right away.
I still think "Captain Ace" goes on too long at 6:42 no matter how good the saxophone playing sounds. The horn playing is put to better use on "Second Look."
Still such an error can be forgiven even if there wasn't the inclusion of a bonus track as catchy as "Densmore's Gone."
Matt Lamkin keeps the interest level up with his singing.
The song titles alone are enough to intrigue me. But the hooks go even with further particularly on "Saratoga." The guitar work from Lamkin and Matty McLoughlin keep things rocking here and elsewhere.
The rock gets hardest on "They Say." The power of the music gets punctuated by guitar riffs recalling late 60s metal like Iron Butterfly or Led Zeppelin crossed with late 70s punk.
The band can play with urgency, evident on "Tallboy" even if their spelling isn't quite as dramatic as Aretha Franklin's.
