This is the album that I have been waiting for this year. For those of you unfamiliar with the band Sparta let me give you a brief synopsis. Sparta is about half of the guys that were in the influential and powerful At The Drive In. ATDI’s founding member, Jim Ward, has taken over vocal duties here and while you can ultimately tell that they have ties to ATDI, they reach further, almost into an emo field but without the whining. In fact, I can’t say that Sparta whines at all. Instead, they coax you closer with Jim’s very apt voice and then pummel you with a wall of guitars. Wiretap Scars is an album that really grows on you with each listen. There are hidden highlights that come out with each addition play. Guitars are crunchy but Sparta is not afraid to get up close and personal. Emotional but unafraid. They are the perfect mix between emo and hard rock. They still use punk influnces like Fugazi but mold them into a more accessible version. It will be interesting to see what the other ATDI offshoot Mars Volta will sound like.
