Released on March 18th, I have recently been lucky enough to have been forwarded a sneak peek at the new material from Billie Myers. And I would like to be among the first to tell you it's excellent.
Formerly known the world over for single 'Kiss The Rain', this one time commercial blockbuster has moved in a new direction for the new LP, now distinctly independent in her approach, taking more singer-songwriterly control. It results in a brilliantly upbeat lead single 'Wonderful' (released on the same day as the album) which has all the vocal layering you would expect from a potential pop hit, a catchy chorus which has a brilliantly quiet showing towards the end to allow it to kick back in.
This upbeat track however stands out on an album that moves generally at a slow-ish pace and has a more sombre but beautiful style. Alongside the ever present guitar and vocal, a mix of instruments and styles from electronic to folk come into play, making this an album that almost everyone will be able to pick out a a favourite track from. A bit of a jack of all trades maybe - but its definitely one way of guaranteeing a wide audience without subscribing to overall pop tropes.
