Just three little songs. That's all it took. Just three little songs to reignite a burning passion for a genre I've long held close to my heart - Blues Rock. With their debut EP (imaginatively titled The Debut EP) Red Butler have restored faith in a genre that is too often forgotten.
It doesn't last long, but this release is a tantalising eye opener into the sound of Red Butler - all roots/blues/funk and searing guitar and vocals. All three songs have something about them which mean that the wait for a full length EP will be high with anticipation.
'Bringing Out The Devil In Me' is pacy, drum driven and energetic. 'Last Page of the Blues' is slow, willowy, atmospheric. And 'Walk In My Shadow' is built around a guitar line that hooks you in without hesitation. Just three little songs, but excellent stuff.
And the best thing? This isn't the work of a grizzled old veteran band, as is usually the case with this genre. This is a four piece in their late teens/early 20's who clearly have a love for it. And long may it continue.
