While the Stranglers are recognized as a very important band in the past, they never really had one solid album of material, making a greatest hits package the best way to enter their world. They were basically England’s answer to the Doors back in the late 70’s (their debut album, Rattus Norvegicus, was released in 1977) but they had more pop overtones than the doors. They had a catchy sound and an ear for a great melody. The album starts out with their very first single, “Peaches, with it’s sing-along refrain it’s hard not to get into it. 15 tracks later and you start to think that this was no punk band but a classy pop band. It was more the bands stage antics that got them in trouble and somehow fit them into the punk pool. They had some attention lately when “Golden Brown (included here) was included on the Snatch soundtrack. "Peaches" was also included on the Sexy Beast soundtrack. There were some attempts at albums in the 90’s but the Stranglers would never attain the glory they had back in the day. When your faith in rock and roll is waning, reach back for a good classic sound like the Stranglers.
