Buddy Miller is about the male equivalent to Emmylou Harris in regards to guesting on other people’s albums and produced a number of artists. His songs have been covered by the likes of the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, and Hank Williams III. It is surprising, however, that Buddy himself hasn’t attained all that much recognition in the public’s eye despite this fact as well as putting out some of the best Americana albums to hit the market. This would be what you would call “a musicians musician. There is no reason though why you and I can’t enjoy his superior songwriting and playing. Midnight and Lonesome is his latest offering to us and what an offering it is. While a hard feat to improve on Cruel Moon, Buddy has actually succeeded. Again, he utilizes the fantastic vocal talents of wife, Julie Miller on most of the tracks to back him up. He also turns to the likes of The Everly Brothers, Percy Mayfield, Jesse Winchester, and Julie for the songs. The variety on Midnight and Lonesome is a bit more diverse too. There are out and out rockers, some laid back grooves “When It Comes To You, and some heartbreakers “A Showman’s Life. Buddy Miller is most definitely one of America’s finest hidden treasures.
