First there was Peter Gabriel with his Realworld label, promoting world music and giving it the recognition that it deserved. Then David Byrne decided to do a similar thing with his Luaka Bop label. Now Joe Strummer is off on the world music kick. Maybe not quite the same but Joe is incorporating many different cultures music in his Mescaleros repertoire. Global A Go-Go is Joe Strummer’s second album in as many years. For some artists this wouldn’t be a surprise but Joe has taken almost ten years without doing any music. Now, he is creating some of the best music of his career. Some hardcore Clash fans may disagree but Joe has definitely proven that he is not content just hanging out. He not only incorporates worldly beats into his music, he rocks right out on some of the songs like “Cool n Out. The main thing that Joe takes into consideration with the Mescaleros music is the songs must have rhythm. He succeeds whether the song is full on or laid back like the title track. My favorite track is the extremely groovy “Bhindi Bhagee. Joe has a place in today’s music scene and let’s hope that he doesn’t take another 10 years off.
