The mighty Superchunk have chosen to grace our ears with another fine slab of their original indie rock. Are they growing up on Here’s To Shutting Up? I think I actually heard lap steel in “Phone Sex. This may have to do with producer Brian Paulson who has produced Uncle Tupelo and Wilco albums. Some fans may get turned off at Shutting Up for the fact that it is a more mature effort from the band. Their songwriting has improved even from 1999’s Come Pick Me Up. Yes, the vocal harmonies that they started on their last album follow through on this album. The band has mellowed out a bit but it looks good on them. Arrangements are lush and the lyrics are intelligent as always. There are intricate melodies all throughout the album. As Superchunk matures with their fans they are not afraid to tread new water and uncover new ideas. Here’s To Shutting Up is one of those albums that grow with every listen. Every time you hear new things going on and discover new things about the arrangements. Mac, Jim, Laura and Jon have delivered yet another solid album to add to their discography.
