Switchfoot is a band from San Diego that met with surfing as their number one priority in life. That focus quickly turned to music with the start of Switchfoot. The band has secured a deal with Columbia and Red Ink and is poised to make a splash into commercial rock. The bands sound is ready for the big time. Not sure if the big time is ready for them but time will tell. Switchfoot play a style of pop rock with some Christian influences (not readily apparent) that is polished and has sing-along choruses that really embed themselves deep into your subconscious. It is a mix of the immediate pop hooks of Toad the Wet Sprocket with the guitar genius of Hum. The vocalist Jonathan Foreman has a great voice and the lyrics are very fitting to this style. The Beautiful Letdown has a really varied sound. Some songs are all out rockers while others lend a different groove to them. The lead single is a very catchy track that incorporates all the aforementioned hooks with a sing-along chorus. This album is focused on ridding the Christian rock moniker that may haunt them. It’s always good to have a base market for you to fall back on but so many times these types of bands have a hard time moving into the mainstream. Switchfoot have what it takes. Let’s see if it works out for them. The Beautiful Letdown is a great album.

The Beautiful Letdown is the last of the early, most authentic Switchfoot albums. 2005s Nothing Is Sound is a bit disappointing, but Im not at all against the direction taken by 2006s Oh! Gravity its just not the Switchfoot I grew up listening to in high school.

The most famous song of the album Dare You to Move is probably the weakest moment. Its just a bit too radio-ready, a bit too power-pop. Switchfoot is unfortunately unique among the Christian music set in that it can pull off a bit more of a quirky, alternative sound passably.

Dare You To Move and Gone are two favorites, the former being pretty and simple with a rock edge and the latter nicely blending pop and rock. Overall, the bands San Diego roots remain evident. Its not more electronic and industrial than surf-rock, but still suitable for play during hot summer days.
