M. (Matt) Ward is one of those lost souls that sits around in his little cabin writing brilliant music and recording them on his little 4 track machine. End of Amnesia is a long lost Howe Gelb album (you will find Howe on “Seashell Tale). M. Ward has a raspy and yet very beautiful voice and the ability to back up his own voice (that darn studio trickery). It is more often than not that an artist is his own best backup vocalist (take Elliott Smith for instance). Ward is able to write charmingly beautiful songs with a slight twang to them and bestows a haunting overtone on them. If Elliott Smith added some country to his bedroom recordings they wouldn’t be this good. End of Amnesia is such a good title too, because M. Ward evokes the feeling of sudden realization of life but in a waking state. This is a brilliant little album that should win over many alt-country fans.
