Former Jayhawker is back with another fine solo effort. He has his Creekdipper’s in tow as well to provide another from-the-heart affair. While his work with the Jayhawks cannot be overlooked, one cannot help but admire his faithfulness to true roots music. December’s Child is an album that sound like it was written on a farm with his faithful wife (Victoria Williams) by his side throughout the entire effort. If you happen to be a Williams fan then you will be delighted to learn that she is all over this album. She is the tried and true member of the Creekdippers. The album opens up with “How Can I Send Tonight (There To Tell You) with the brilliant refrain “Thought a tear might dry your eyes. If you are looking for rock songs you will have to keep looking. Mark is right into traditional instruments like the banjo, harmonica, piano and the dulcimer. A special treat that Olson provides is “Say You’ll Be Mine in which Mark joins up with Gary Louris for a look back on what made the Jayhawks extra special. This is a fine album and will not only please Mark Olson fans but Jayhawk and Victoria Williams fans as well.
