Sixteen Horsepower is back, sporting a new label but no new sound. Folklore will sound familiar to any Sixteen Horsepower fans that have been along for the ride. I shouldn’t be so hard on the guys because Folklore is a little more laidback but very somber with interesting stories to tell. The bio states that the band’s David Eugene Edwards was raised by his grandfather, a travelling Nazerene preacher. This album has a bit of a religious feeling to it while maintaining the rootsy side. The vocal style that David chooses on Folklore has a Nick Cave quality too it while the music is spooky. As a normal Sixteen Horsepower album, there are a nice array of instruments being played on Folklore. For a change of pace, the album ends up with “La Robe A Parasol a French track that is quite lively and sung more as a standard folk song. Folklore is another great addition to the ever growing catalog of Sixteen Horsepower.
