It seems like there is a new revolution in the United Kingdom right now. It’s being hailed as everything from quiet core to folk rock. Turin Brakes are right in there with the best of them. Their mandate is to write wistfull and yet intelligent songs that appeal to not only the rock crowd (Coldplay, Travis) but the folkier crowd as well. Turin Brakes’ music is generally acoustic with that pleasant strumming that has become very popular. The band is primarily Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian with other musicians randomly helping out. They have known each other since elementary school and have come to be very close. Their music is the result of a nurtured relationship and showcases some superb songwriting. The Optimist LP is able to sound different than a lot of the quiet music that has been coming out of the UK by sticking it’s head up just a little higher and sounding a little more firm. The musicians that Olly and Gale have recruited are seasoned and prove to be a great choice on the album. Turin Brakes will rise above the rest to become one of the great up and coming UK bands. Maybe not with the Optimist LP but this sets a great foundation for what’s to come.
