There has been so much hype about this band coming to our shores from Australia. The Vines came to the USA to record some songs and everyone has been anticipating their debut ever since. Upon discovery that the disc was at an introductory price of $8.99 at the local record shop I picked it up to verify what all the critics have been saying about The Vines. While they may fit into the garage scene that is sweeping the nation (see The Hives and White Stripes for more evidence) they remind me more of early 90’s grunge. They have a lot of what made Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots so volatile as well as a similarity to that of Nirvana. While the Vines may borrow plenty of past influences, they also move forward quite nicely. They mix the heavy and the not so heavy to make a very nice mix of things. And while not quite revolutionary, you know the Vines are out to have a good time and hopefully make a buck at this thing called rock n roll. Check it out while you can still purchase Highly Evolved for the introductory price.
