Chuck E. Weiss is obviously making up for lost time. When 1999’s Extremely Cool hit the shelves people were blown away, seeing that this was his first album since 1982’s The Other Side Of Town. Now, only three years later, Chuck is here with yet another new and hip album. Chuck E. takes some cues from his friend and fellow hipster, Tom Waits but there is much more to Chuck than the jerky americana that Tom puts out. Chuck uses more of a rounded approach to his songwriting. He uses jazz, blues, R&B, Cajun, as well as folk with his crazy silly approach on songs such as “G-d Damn Liars. He is a man who doesn’t really care what he puts out but has one hell of a fun time recording it for his fans. Old Souls opens with one of the Cajun flavored track called “Congo Square at Midnight, which is one of the finest tracks on the album. There is also a track called “Down The Road A Piece that he recorded with the legendary Willie Dixon back in 1970. For your entertainment, there is a live video of Weiss and his band doing a track called “Cub Scout Suit with the memorable lyrics of “If you want to see me just pull it out / yeah the Cub Scout Suit with the crotch cut out.
