In the last days of Beastie Boy’s Grand Royal label they released this slab of white-boy hip-hop. Scapegoat Wax is basically Marty James who employs the help of a few friends, most notably Chuck Prophet. Where Marty’s rapping is lacking a bit is made up by his extremely enjoyable samples and beats. He raps about pretty much everything in everyday life like the girl in the local grocery store (“Aisle 10(Hello Alison), driving on the local highway (“Freeway), and broken love (“Light of the Moon). His arrangements are very nice and soulful for the most part. His voice reminds me a lot of G. Love and Special Sauce. Scapegoat Wax isn’t revolutionary by any means but Marty James knows how to spin a beat and have a good time doing it. Okeblow would be a great party album. White boys can rap.
