Saul is not your average everyday hip-hop artist. Let’s, for arguments sake, call him a beat poet. Now a beat poet is not much different than a rapper, only in name really but the intellect of a beat poet tends to be a little more thoughtful and deep. Saul Williams fits into this category. Saul takes poetry and infuses it with beats and music in order to take it to a broader audience. Now, Amethyst Rock Star isn’t going to be for everyone but there are a select few out there that will take Saul’s word as gospel. You may recognize his name from a 1996 film entitled “SLAM, in which he co-wrote and starred in. He won many awards for the movie. Saul Williams is a man who isn’t afraid to go against the grain. In fact that’s what he does the best. He has contributed killer tracks to Eargasms, and Lyricist Lounge and now is his time for recognition. Amethyst Rock Star really is a different album that may or may not appeal to hip hop fans. There are plenty of razor sharp raps and rhymes here but Saul isn’t about vocal skill. His talent lies in the actual words themselves. Listen closely and open your mind. You may be enlightened. You may be annoyed. The background music is almost as inspired as Saul’s vocals.
