I guess I wasn't quite ready for how powerful the movie Scratch was going to be. If you haven't heard about this movie let me bring you up to speed. Scratch is a documentary on the birth of the DJ as we know today. From back in the day when you had DJ's like Grand Wizard Theodore (supposedly the originator of the first scratch. No, it wasn't some funk Disc Jockey who spilt his Heinekin on his turntable.) and the most mentioned influence, Herbie Hancock's DJ on "Rockit", DST. The reach of scratching in the DJ world reaches way out there. There are some great interview clips with Mixmaster Mike, DJ Premier from Gang Starr, Q-Bert, DJ Shadow, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, and a lot of the old school guys too. Afrika Bambaataa is brought up quite a bit too for starting his movement. They get into DJ Battles (DMC is talked about immensely), beat-juggling, and then they move into the art of turntablism. DJ Shadow discusses his digging techniques (looking for old vinyl). Oh, did I mention that this DVD is a double? You get more extras than you could ever want. Learn how to rock a party with DJ Z-Trip. Watch Qbert do his thing in multi-angles. Learn how to notate scratching. See extended interviews and additional scenes that were cut from the original. If anyone saw Dogtown and Z-Boys, Scratch does the same justice to hip hop as that did to skateboarding. Very well done.
