Sounding The Seventh Trumpet is quite an interesting album. It is Avenged Sevenfold’s debut album and actually the first time I have heard the band. They are an interesting band drawing on all sorts of inspiration. They label themselves as a hardcore punk band but they take more nods from the metal scene than anything else. The band literally switches from a death metal style ala Scandinavia (“Darkness Surrounding) to a glam style ballad (“Warmness of the Soul) to a Fat Wreck Chord style punk (“Streets). Talk about switching it up. The thing is, most bands would stumble on doing this many genres but Avenged Sevenfold manages to do it quite nicely. This has a lot to do with the versatility of lead singer M Shadow. He can scream with the best of them but he also cites the likes of Axl Rose as one of his musical mentors. These guys are diverse and will appeal mostly to death metal or hardcore fans but anyone who has had their curiosity piqued should seek out Avenged Sevenfold’s Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. It’s a very interesting listen.
