Could you possibly call the brilliance that is Cave In progressive metal? It is very progressive but when that term comes to mind you can't help but think of bands like Dream Theater and Rush. Is that a bad thing? Depends on who you talk to. Cave In is the bastard son of Steve Brodsky and even after 2 years of it's release, Jupiter is still gaining a large following due to it's total uniqueness. If Thom Yorke was a big burly biker then Radiohead might sound a bit like Cave In. Previously the band used more hardcore vocals but on Jupiter, the band has resorted to actually singing their lyrics. There is plenty to be proud of on Jupiter and Cave In should be very proud of it's accomplishements. There are plenty of dynamics at work here too. Some tracks drift along, unsuspecting and then whip you when your back is turned. Others are just unrelenting from the get-go. Cave In's Jupiter will appeal to more than just metalheads. This is an album that changes upon every listen and repeated listens will be necessary. Let's hope they keep it up with their next album. I managed to find a copy that came with a three song EP with it.
