While Lifer may not be the most original new metal band to get signed in this little metal resurgence that’s happening, they do have some merits. One of their biggest assets is Nick Coyle’s very diverse vocals. He can be dark and brooding like Maynard from Tool or bright and refreshing at the turn of a hat. The music doesn’t even touch on rap-metal, which is a blessing. We really don’t need any more of that. What they do that many metal bands are doing is resorting to using a DJ. Tony Kruszko is the chosen man for the job but you will be hard pressed to find any scratching happening here. What Tony does is actually just use samples to make Lifer’s music even more dark and thicker than it would normally be. And how’s this for a twist; Lifer was produced by Alex Lifeson of Rush fame! There is a nice variety of songs and the heaviness never really subsides until you are left with the acoustic bonus track “Perfect. Deftones, Tool and Godsmack fans will really enjoy Lifer, with the band borrowing elements from all three and injecting many of their own characteristics.
