Quicksand - Manic Compression
It was obvious that Quicksand wasn't quite ready for the success that they achieved with Manic Compression. They toured the album and then broke up shortly after. It is only now that we can look back and see the influence this hardcore / metal band had on the kids of the era and future fans. 7 years later people still discuss the powerful guitar riffs and crafty original songwriting that only Quicksand was capable of. They took the post-rock style of Fugazi and added more fuzz and volume until it was unrecognizable. The heaviness was there and so was the accessibility. This was a unique thing back then. Bands were either accessible or heavy. Couldn't really find a place for both but that's exactly what Quicksand strove to do and succeeded. Guitarist Tom Capone went on to record an album with semi-supergroup Handsome. Walter Schreifels (previously in the influential hardcore band Gorilla Biscuits) went on to form the more melodic Rival Schools. Quicksand's Manic Compression is a must for any hardcore / metal / rock collection.
