This is an album that has been sitting in my “to review pile for well over a year. I finally caught up to it and gave it a spin and was quite impressed. With the cover and name I was expecting something along the lines of The Cult but I was way off. Spiritual Beggars is a band that features an ex-Carcass guitarist (doesn’t sound a thing like Carcass) Michael Amott and monster rock riffs. It was recorded in Sweden where the band members spend most of their time and I would bet have a large fan-base. Spiritual Beggars might get lumped into the stoner rock category but I would think that that would be limiting due to the diversity of Ad Astra. They borrow a lot of sounds and attitude from rock legends Deep Purple but are able to inject a dose of really cool “now feeling. When you listen to Ad Astra, you can see that their influences are diverse and their talent lies far and wide. When Spiritual Beggars had sold over 60,000 albums world-wide they were easily picked up by the Music Of Nations and distributed through Koch International. This is justification to band that just likes to rock out. You’ll find yourself raising your metal horns to Spiritual Beggars.
