I wasn't going to post a review of System of a Down just for the sheer fact that they were on Sony but after listening to it over and over I realized that this band deserves all the press it can get. System of a Down has somehow ignored all trends in Metal music over the past couple of years. They don't even attempt the rap-metal that was dominating the market for a couple years. Instead, they reach back even further for some of the most trippy heavy music that ever hit the stores. I hear quite a bit of Dead Kennedys in System of a Down but one hell of a lot heavier as well as the sadly underrated Faith No More. System of a Down is capable of punishing the listener but if the listener isn't scared off with the different style they use they will be rewarded with one of the best metal albums since Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. And that ain't no joke. This is a totally powerful album that exploits some very fine musicians and front man Serj Tankian is a vocal wizard. If metal is boring you and you can't get a thrill out of hardcore then I would suggest that you go out on a limb and investigate System of a Down's Toxicity. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I was.

SOAD took a slight turn in the wrong direction here, coming off their phenomenal self-titled debut. Established as a spastic yet deep-thinking alt-metal outfit, for some reason (and this continues to this day) the band has edged closer and closer towards the line between what is and isn't uninspired. Certain songs on Toxicity shine and the rest are stuck in the shadows. "Chop Suey" was, as we all know, the launching point for all the band's successes up until this point, and it was one of the best radio hits of it's day, for sure. The title track, the brooding doomy feel of "Aerials" and the heavy-handed assault of "Bounce" all serve as highlights on an above-average album that, for myself personally, failed to live up to expectations only in it's lack of what made their debut so striking and an intense listen.

The lead singer does sound an awful lot like Jello Biafra don't he? haha.
