This is a very interesting project. Producer and Soundgun’s label head Edan Cohen had a vision of revisiting some of the Muscle Shoals sounds that he loved so dearly. Edan incorporated many of his Philadelphia friends and bands to help him out with this project, which was mainly to promote the Soundgun label. Edan asked Jimmy Johnson (a Muscle Shoals studio founder and legendary rhythm guitarist) to help co-produce Burlap Palace and to Edan’s surprise Jimmy signed on. The best part of it was going down to the legendary Muscle Shoals Studios to produce 4 of the tracks. Let’s get to the music shall we. The album really consists of unheard of artists (at least for people not in the Philly area). The only exception is Songs: Ohia who do “Sweet Release�. One surprise here is the inclusion of “Careless Whisper� that a hip hop group named Shotgun Squad take a crack at. The production on the album really shines through, as do the arrangements of these classic tracks. Burlap Palace isn’t just for soul fans but anyone that is interested in some very talented up and coming musicians.
