This is a great compilation that Catch and Release has put together. The Trans-Canada Beaver Cookoff is a collection of bands from across Canada, each contributing at least 2 songs each and some up to 4. The first two songs are from The Rambling Ambassadors, Brent Cooper from Heuvos Rancheros’ new band. Basically they are just an extension of Huevos in the Reverend Horton Heat side of things. Toronto’s Sikasta is up next with 4 tracks. This is a new band for me but they have a heavy funk sound happening sort of like Tricky Woo. The Nasty On comes to us from Vancouver and have been getting quite a bit of recognition from their EP and full-length released in 2002. They contribute 4 rave-ups too that really get the heart pumping. Check out other reviews of The Nasty On on MusicEmissions. One of Ian Blurton’s (Change of Heart) many projects, Montreal based Bionic, is here with three awesome Doughboy-flavored tracks with Jonathan Cummins singing. Calgary’s infamous Forbidden Dimension is up next with 3 great tracks, the best of which is “Calcinator Death Ray. And finally another Montreal-based band that I haven’t heard of before, The Donkeys check in with 2 tracks to close out the album. Their “Pink Bunny turns things up for the finale. It is a Monster Magnet styled huge rock-fest. Cam, you’ve done a nice job collecting some of Canada’s better hard rock acts onto one album.
