Don’t hop on this Kinks album and expect all their hits like “Lola and “You Really Got Me. On This is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies & the Kinks, a group of alternative bands have been pulled together to pay homage to one of the great songwriters of our time and have done a bang up job. Artist’s include Fountains of Wayne, Jonathan Richman, Josh Rouse, Queens of the Stone Age (don’t expect the sonic assault that you usually get from QOTSA), Cracker, Matthew Sweet, Lambchop, Fastball, Ron Sexsmith, Yo La Tengo and a live track featuring Ray Davies himself with Damon Albarn lending his magical touch. I’m sure Ray Davies is touched by the renditions from these artists. Matthew Sweet does a very touching version of “Big Sky from Village Green Preservation Society and Lambchop takes “Art Lover and makes it their own in their trademark mopey country style. This group of diverse artists was pulled together by Jim Pitt, the band booker for Conan O’Brian’s late night show.
