I have been a low-laying fan of Ron Sexsmith since his debut album, Ron Sexsmith but I haven't been taken like others have with his abilities. I respect his songwriting talents as well as his unique vocals but some people rave about Ron like he's the best singer/songwriter ever (Elvis Costello and Elton John to name a couple of prominent fans). Cobblestone Runway came across my desk and I just sort of put it aside thinking it was just another Sexsmith album. My mistake. He seems to have found a renewed spirit (or I am finally old enough to understand his pains). Cobblestone Runway is an amazingly introspective album that tugs on the heartstrings and songs like "These Days" just seem so sunny. The only other song of this album's caliber (arguably) is "Strawberry Blonde" from his Other Songs album. This album outshines most of his other full albums. Other albums were more fractured than this one. Runway seems to instill a feeling that this is a complete work, whereas the other albums were a song-by-song affair. The songs here just breathe inspiration and emotion. This is Ron's shining hour. And the bonus track is a reprise of the beautiful "Gold In Them Hills" that Ron performs with Chris Martin of Coldplay. Like you need another reason to pick this album up.
