Washington DC?s Phaser say they took their name from a word scrawled on a New York subway train window but I would have my bets that they were big Spiritualized fans. Either way, their ethereal pop music is a gorgeous and softly stated affair. Brothers Siayko and Boris Skalsky, Ritse DeJong and Paul Wood formed Phaser in the fall of 1999. The band then took to studios to engineer the album that would become Sway. Phaser?s music is far from immediate. It?s the type of music that you have to listen to closely on headphones in order to relish in every aching detail that the boys worked on. It?s a very mellow listen with loads of piano and soft guitar with the audible instruments slowly working their way into you conscience. While their music has the same sort of feel that recent Pink Floyd has, they manage to reach to some other influences like Spiritualized and the Doves to make their presence even more relevant. Sway is a very mature album for a young group like this but time will allow them to fully realize their potential. In the meantime enjoy tracks like ?Are You There? and ?Can?t Get You Out Of My Mind?. Sway is a great debut but I feel that the best is yet to come from Phaser.
