Entrance is the new project by Guy Blakeslee, the former bass player of The Convocation Of… Guy takes to the stage all by himself with his Entrance project, with only a guitar and his three-octave vocal range. You may catch him stomping his foot as well. His style is somewhere with one foot in the blues and the heart of a punk rocker. Think Dan Bern hanging out with Mississippi John Hurt for a month. A track like “I Love The Light is a fantastic blues guitar solo. While I found his vocals a bit grating after the length of the album, I also found some charm in them. The guitar playing is so unconventional but it would be the fact that Guy was never formally taught and he plays left handed with a right handed guitar. Actually, I found the guitar playing to be the best part of The Kingdom. The recording is as minimalist as one could imagine. As bare as Guy’s performances, there is basically only his voice and guitar with the odd percussion thrown in. Entrance may be an acquired taste but I predict that the indie world will fall in love with Guy over this release.
