The Coral has really been hyped up as of lately so I decided to find out what all the fuss was about. What I found on the Coral's debut album was a whole gamut of styles proving the band was more schizophrenic than half of the residents of the mad house. There are times when The Coral sounds like the Doors and yet there are others where they are leaning towards ska in the vein of Madness. It's almost as if the band spreads itself to thin over the styles and is unable to pull it off without sounding weak and unoriginal. What The Coral does prove is that this group of young musicians (the oldest member is only 21) is very adventuresome and is willing to experiment. I predict that by the time their next album is upon us they have refined their sound and master more of the 60's style of music they are delving into. The Coral is an interesting listen albeit not as groundbreaking as the British Press claim it to be. But as we know from their past claims, the British Press likes to make artists bigger than they deserve to be at times. The Coral is a band to keep an eye on but this album is not groundbreaking. Their psychedelic sound needs a bit of a refinement to reach the levels it needs to be.
