El Guapo - Fake French
It took me many listens to get into El Guapo's first album for Dischord, super/system but once I started to understand their wacky, artistic frame of mind I was able to enjoy it. That being said, I was prepared for a battle with Fake French. I didn't have to battle though. El Guapo have refined their sound and are a little more likeable on first listen. Indeed, there are some that will find Fake French hard to digest but over all it is a very fun, experimental album that is quite original. The group seems like it's going down the path of bands like Soul Coughing, which is far from a bad thing. The album was recorded in numerous sessions over six months, providing a diversity rarely seen. El Guapo is a band that is going to end up in the cult status section if they keep up albums like this. They are one's that don't really fit anywhere but are brilliant in themselves.
