Bettie Serveert really hasn't gone anywhere despite the lack of press about the band. The Dutch based band basically decided to take a break after their Private Suit album. They have regrouped and to this reviewer the band sounds refreshed and renewed. Carol van Dijk's voice is strong and the lyrics are well written. I kept imagining Sheryl Crow singing for Buffalo Tom. My wife said she sounds like Chrissie Hynde. Either way Carol is in fine company. There is still some Velvet Underground in the band with the track "White Dog" sounding like a Lou Reed track. This may just be fallout from their 1998 live album Bettie Serveert Plays Venus In Furs. Log 22 catches the group in pretty much the same form as they were back on their classic Palomine or Lamprey albums. It's really strange but it is starting to feel like the 90's all over again with a new Bettie Serveert hitting my desk at the exact same time as a new Throwing Muses album. Call me crazy but I predict that one of these 90's bands is going to make it big, the way they should have in 1995. Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, and Soul Asylum need to reform in order for the complete 90's transformation to be complete.
