Stairwell - The Sound Of Change
Orange County is full of talent and the new Hopeless signing of Stairwell means that another band may have an opportunity to reach a larger audience. Stairwell has been playing in the area for a while (The Sounds of Change has actually been available for a couple of years) but now they are going to take a shot at the real thing, with a bigger label supporting them. The four piece rock band plays catchy power-pop with juicy riffs and harmonic vocals. Orange County has been blossoming lately with other Hopeless bands like Thrice (who has recently inked a deal with Island) and Avenged Sevenfold. Time will tell if Stairwell will follow the success of their fellow label-mates. The vocals are what do it for me. Zak and Jonathan harmonize perfectly on pretty much every song. They are meant for singing together. If you like your pop music along the lines of Saves The Day then Stairwell should be on your list of music to pick up. Their songs are very well crafted and there are enough differences and surprises to keep you glued together. There are even times when I hear the Weakerthans in their music. I hope they do well with The Sound Of Change. "Perfect Weather" would make for a great lead off single. (Originally released on Takehold Records 2001)
