It seemed like only yesterday I asked myself, "Whatever happened to The Folk Implosion? Why haven't we seen anything from them since One Part Lullaby?" Well, my question has finally been answered with a new album from Lou Barlow and his cohorts. And while some people may be wishing that Barlow and company took a little more time in releasing The New Folk Implosion, I have to look at some of the merits this album has. John Davis has left the ranks but Lou managed to convince Imaad Wasif to fill in the empty position (no "Pole Position", that's for sure). Now, if you were coming in to listen to Mr. Barlow and his Folk Implosion for the first time you wouldn't be aware of some of the genius albums this man has created like Dare To Be Surprised. You may not even be aware that he used to have another band called Sebadoh with seminal albums like Harmacy and Bakesale. You would be looking at the New Folk Implosion with fresh eyes and unbiased ears. I tried my hardest to take this approach to this album but I was left without any of the catchiness that Lou is quite capable of. There are promising factors in this album but it just seems like Lou may have had other things on his mind when recording this album. One of the most interesting tracks is a folk ballad called "Pearl". It has a very basic guitar track without much accompaniment. Most of the tracks still maintain the rhythmic beat oriented feel that people have come to expect. Approach this album cautiously if you are a fan. You may be disappointed.
