Double Trouble... Hmmm seems like I have heard that name before... Oh yeah, they were the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan's back up band. That's exactly who Double Trouble is: Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon plus a slew of other guest artists have created quite a contemporary blues album. To throw just some of the names that are on this album at you: Dr. John, Charlie Sexton (who worked with Layton and Shannon in the Arc Angels band), Susan Tedeschi, Eric, Johnson, Jonny Lang, Willie Nelson, Gordie Johnson... and the list just keeps going. It is usual for these star studded affairs to end up half baked but with the skill and talent of Double Trouble they manage to maintain a very consistent pace throughout. They seem to have a magical chemistry with Charlie Sexton who appears on a majority of the tracks. On "Groundhog Day" the unlikely combination of Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) and Jonny Lang on vocals lends itself to be one of the highlights of the album. The Susan Tedeschi belts out Led Zep's "Rock and Roll" is uncanny. No replacement for Stevie Ray but this shows the reason why Layton and Shannon (Double Trouble) are the hottest rhythm section going.
