When Johnny Dowd came apparent to me with 1999's Pictures From Lifes Other Side I was shocked and amazed at how someone of Dowd's nature has never had more exposure. He would appeal to fans of Nick Cave and without a doubt, Tom Waits. All three musicians have the knack for creating a macabre style of song that is darker than a psychotics deepest dreams. Dowd has a few years on Waits and Cave which could explain the even darker writing on Temporary Shelter. Dowd has found that the ying to his yang is the amazing vocal talents of Kim Sherwood-Caso present here again. Johnny's style of singing (or rambling) is always dark and morose even when the songs are somewhat pleasant. The tracks on Temporary Shelter are topically not quite as morbid as Pictures but Dowd does have a thing with death.
