Black Cross is a political hardcore band that was born in 2001 when two other Louisville, Kentucky bands fell apart. The band was quick to release an EP on Initial Records called Black Widows Stops A Beating Heart. Then they went on tour in support of the EP and to reach out and gain an army of fans. A deal with Equal Vision was the result of this hard work. The foursome headed off to the studio with none other than J Robbins. Art Offensive is the result and what a blast of hardcore it is. Black Cross is a band that is reaching into areas that hardcore hasn't touched before. It is the aural equivalent of jumping out of a plan without a parachute. Rob Pennington has a very unique voice that works in the bands setting. Some times he goes right into an old school hardcore voice and other times he sounds like he would fit right at home with a garage rock band. The nice thing is that he isn't so grating that he ends up hard to listen to. Ryan Patterson's guitar playing is intense by all measures. Art Offensive is almost over before it begins, with a brief 26 minutes of mind-altering music with a message. Black Cross has provided us with a very impressive debut that will set the pace for the rest of the hardcore bands to follow.
